Screen mode allows registered players in good moderation standing to play Rec Room on PC or PlayStation 4 without VR headset but with a keyboard, mouse, DualShock 4 controller or Xbox One/Xbox 360 controller. #RecRoomOriginal Games and Custom Rooms with the #screen Room Tag allow players in screen mode to enter the room. The #pickup Room Tag means that screen mode players and all VR players are allowed to enter a room.
Starting Screen Mode
You can start screen mode without a VR headset by starting Rec Room without connected VR headset (on PSVR: without connected Move controllers) and - if asked - selecting "Play in Screen Mode". If you have no experience in Rec Room, please read the code of conduct. In particular, be aware that using sexist, racist, discriminatory or harassing language will get you banned sooner or later.
Apparently, some combinations of Xbox controllers and Windows versions don't work, for example, I was unable to use an Xbox One controller with Rec Room on Windows 7 (while the same controller works with other Steam games on Windows 7 and with Rec Room on Windows 10).
