Rec Room UPDATE - the "Happy New Decade!" edition[]

December 19, 2019

OK remember we said last update was probably our last for the year? Well we lied! We're sneaking one more in before taking a short break over Xmas/New Years. We'll be back in the new year (decade!) with more craziness!

Here's what's in today's update:

  • New "Fancy Bubbly" item - share a fancy bottle of bubbly with up to five friends to ring in the new year! Pop the cork, then toast with the glasses, complete with a satisfying "clink!" sound =]

An Xmas gift for our Oculus Quest players... the following rooms are now available on Quest:

  • ^Bowling
  • ^TheLounge (and the many Custom Rooms build on top of it)
  • ^Propulsion - the second disc golf map, with the world famous "troll fan" on Hole 4 =]

...we hope to release more rooms for Quest players early in the new year. Stay tuned.

And some bug fixes:

  • Issue where players could get teleported to center of room
  • StuntRunner - air control is back to normal, sorry about that
  • Some other minor bug fixes and clean up

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://recroom.com/community

Thanks to all for a great year! It's been a lot of fun for us, and we appreciate y'all. Please be excellent to each other in-game and out, and we'll see you in 2020!

As always, we love to hear your feedback, so please don't hesitate to let us know what you think...

Rec Room UPDATE - the "Fixin’ to Ship on iOS" edition[]

November 21, 2019

We’ve been doing a lot of cleanup work (across all platforms, but especially on iOS) as we prepare for launch. We are super-excited about how Rec Room is shaping up on iOS, and we hope you’ll be able to check it out! It will be available Soon(tm).

There’s a lot of stuff in this update, so strap in...

Logout support:

We tried shipping this once before and it... er... didn’t go well. We fixed a bunch more issues and we’re trying again!

  • There's now a Logout button in Watch > Profile. This lets you log out and log in with a different account without quitting the app.
  • Please note that logout is not currently supported on Oculus Rift or Oculus Quest. We hope to add support in the future.
  • As part of this work, we also added a "Retry" button if login fails for any reason (e.g., network hiccup causes a login failure)

Turkey hat news:

  • Coming soon - turkey hat!

General tweaks and improvements:

  • Screens - screen players on all platforms can now draw on whiteboards! To do this, pick up a marker (or anything that makes a mark on a drawable surface) and walk up to a whiteboard (or sticky note, or art canvas, etc.).
  • rec.net - you can now see who you’re subscribed to, and who is subscribed to you, on your rec.net profile page.
  • Radio is now paused during new user flow (so you don’t hear two music tracks at once)
  • Revised layout of merch booths in Rec Center, Paintball, etc.
  • Updated "party up" VFX!
  • Updated pick up glow for dropped objects (e.g., paintball guns)
  • Tidied up presentation of Room Chat
  • Improved contrast of player chat (so you can read it against dark backgrounds)
  • Screens - Improved throwing objects... you should be able to make a basket in the Rec Center now!
  • Screens - Improved holding objects... use inspect mode to adjust your grip!
  • Screens - watch menu no longer clips through walls (well, much less often...)
  • Screens - you can now properly throw wood planks in ^LostSkulls

Maker Pen stuff:

  • Dramatically reduced “drifting” of shapes when creating in the same room together. We think it’s good now! Please tell us if you disagree.
  • Improved behavior of Samplers in multiplayer rooms - players should be able to hear audio sampler playback both before uploading and after configuring/connecting it.
  • Role Mapper chip - fixed roles "rotating" in the role mapper chip along with role mappers assigning the wrong roles.
  • Maker Pen - the Paint Brush prop is now set to blue by default
  • When you move respawnable props with the Maker Pen, the respawn position is now also updated.
  • Improved UI flow for editing roles (it’s not good, but it’s better =])
  • Clamped max distance (1,000,000+) on gizmos to sane limit to prevent weird behavior
  • Animation Gizmo tweaks:
    • Fixed disconnect hang issue
    • Now supports “Physical” shape containers
    • Scrubbing through animations should no longer modify animation data
    • The “StopAtStart” config setting now works for looping animations
  • Clarified wording/tooltips for Sticky and Decoration objects:
    • Decoration tooltip now explains that these objects aren't tracked by trigger zones
    • Sticky tooltip now explains that these objects will stick to other objects!
    • Tooltip for object mode on trigger zones now explains that Decoration objects aren't tracked.

We’ve made a lot of improvements to our iOS build as we prepare for full launch on iOS:

  • iOS - Rec Room now supports full duplex voice chat with echo cancellation (no longer need to tap mic icon to talk, etc). You can still toggle mic on/off with same button for privacy, etc.
  • iOS - Many improvements to touch control layout, icons, etc.
  • iOS - Made watch menu take up whole screen, and you can now tap “outside” the menu to close it
  • iOS - We now support cut and paste in various keyboard fields
  • iOS - Rooms will be auto-saved when app is backgrounded, so you don’t lose work if iOS kicks us out of memory!
  • iOS - Added a control help screen in Watch > Settings > Help
  • iOS - Disabled Rec Royale to reduce crashing on iOS devices :-(

Bug squishin':

  • Fixed a bug where VR players could spawn outside their Dorm/fall out of rooms too easily. Sorry about that!
  • Paintball - can no longer throw the flag through the ground on PS4/Quest
  • Stunt Runner - you should now get a notification when you achieve a new personal best
  • Laser Tag - pulled the plug on some overzealous robots that would keep fighting even though the game was over...
  • Rec Royale - fixed floating in the air after teleporting off the glider
  • Dodgeball - fixed an issue where the game could get into a weird state. (Yes, even weirder than usual)
  • Soccer - fixed some broken textures
  • Players standing on top of other respawning players should no longer respawn with them.
  • Fixed an issue where you couldn't see your score on non-Stunt Runner leaderboards.
  • Fixed an issue where players could sometimes switch teams when they weren't supposed to.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause your hair to go missing when you loaded into the Dorm Room.
  • Updated Rec Room logo in various places in the app, on recroom.com, and on Steam!
  • Fixed bug where holohelpers would stop playing after opening the watch

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://recroom.com/community

Thanks for playing Rec Room! As always, we love to hear your feedback, so please don’t hesitate to let us know what you think.

Rec Room PATCH for the "More Tools, Fewer Bugs" Edition![]

November 12, 2019

This is a maintenance release with an update to the object rotation/shifting issue in custom rooms.

  • Unfortunately our attempted fix made things worse, so this update rolls that fix back :-/
  • We are testing an alternate fix, if things go well (and we hope they well) that fix will be in the NEXT update.

Apologies for the ongoing issue, it's a top priority to get it sorted out. Here's what to expect with today's update:

1) Rooms which currently appear broken due to the recent changes and which have NOT been re-saved should now be fixed

2) Rooms that creators have fixed to work with the new behavior should continue to look correct

3) Rooms which have not been fixed, but HAVE been re-saved, will not be fixed (because they now have saved the shifted rotations). If you revert back to an older save, they should appear correct again.

We know this is an annoyance, we'll get it fixed ASAP. We appreciate your patience.

This build also contains some other bug fixes:

  • Moved the default dorm room role chips to the area near the whiteboard for new brand new players
  • Restored old room enter sound.
  • ^Crescendo - Added wood planks on top of the scaffolding section in the CBM Dungeon so its easier to see in the dark
  • ^Crescendo - Fixed a bug in the Dungeon level so the gate messages if there are enemies left correctly
  • ^Crescendo - Fixed a visual bug in the grand hall where a chain was floating
  • ^Crescendo - pitchfork is now capable of critical hit damage.
  • Rum jugs when blocked now shatter instead of disarming and falling to the ground
  • Shape and tube creation sounds reworked slightly

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://recroom.com/community

Thank you for playing, and, as always, we love to hear your feedback! See you again soon! =]

Rec Room Update - the "More Tools, Fewer Bugs" Edition![]

November 7, 2019

Creator Tools and Game Updates:

When we released Stunt Runner, we also added a bunch of new features to our creative tools. But, whether you’re a creator yourself, of just someone who enjoys experiencing player created rooms, these features introduced some new forms of instability for all of us.

For the past several weeks, we’ve been heads-down smashing all the newly introduced bugs we could find (and you’ve helped us find!), and we’ve also burned through a good amount of our creative community’s top-requested bug fixes. We greatly appreciate your patience and feedback in response to our last couple updates.

Okay, here we go:

  • Impulse Volumes and Bounce Pads should now use their correct settings when loading a room or cloning an object
  • You can now configure spawn points so that players keep tools on respawn instead of dropping them
  • You can now select and change other objects from within trigger zones, without selecting the trigger zone itself
  • We fixed a movement bug where multiple chained gizmos weren’t behaving as expected – they should move all gizmos and objects together correctly now
  • You're now immediately prompted with a selection menu when merging new shapes into a costume
  • Maker Pen objects should no longer collide while being transformed
  • Moving Maker Pen objects which are parented should no longer put things in incorrect positions
  • Special role chips (Eliminated, In-Game, and Everyone) can no longer be merged into circuit boards
    • If these roles are already saved in a circuit board in your room or invention they can still be unpacked
  • Leaderboard stat chips should now work as expected when circuits are hidden
  • We now allow more objects to be wired while selected
    • The piston gizmo, for example, would not always let you attach to an object if the piston was selected
  • Light bulb collisions should now accurately reflect their mesh
  • We reworked Audio Samplers to fix bugs and add some much-requested functionality:
    • Fixed bug where samplers that were set to play on initial room load would sometimes fail
    • Sampler playback are now synchronized for multiplayer scenarios! This means that a pulse signal sent to sampler input should now result in reliable, synchronized playback for all.
    • We added two new circuit inputs: Pause and Stop! Pause stops playback when sent a non-zero signal, but can be resumed from its current position with a new play signal. Stop stops playback and seeks back to sampler start.

We also made a bunch of general quality of life fixes:

  • Team wristbands should show up in team games once again, so you can more easily tell what team you’re on
  • Players should not get stuck in place anymore once they see the notification for waiting to join a room!
  • We washed up the screen so on-screen notifications should no longer persist between rooms!
  • Players should no longer get stuck in place if they hit the mercy rule in Disc Golf
  • Tooltips should now appear consistently across the app
  • Should no longer see that pesky pivot in 3D Charades
  • We fixed the bug where teleporters weren’t getting a teleport cooldown after climbing ladders
  • Weapons from chests should now have highlight beacons in all game modes

Halloween may be over but the "Crank the Volume" update is back from the dead!:

It's alive! Maker Pen Audio is back!

  • Turn your volume up and get creating, Maker Pens have been upgraded to have new audio effects!
  • Also we re-tuned some sound effects in other places too! Keep an ear out!

Haunting you again, it's social upgrades:

  • Seeing how long you have to hold a button on iOS devices is now visible
  • Screen mode can relax their hands, auto-pointing has been readjusted
  • Tired of pushing a physical button to enter the shop? Screen mode players can now point at items to buy them!
  • iOS devices should also find that scrolling requires less work
  • Made some adjustments for iOS devices so menus won't get as clogged up
  • iOS devices also got some fresh looks throughout, they are very fashionable now
  • Do the wave! Now able to wave while doing a gesture on iOS devices
  • Made some adjustments to prompts to make sure no one high fives behind your back
  • No more phantom keyboard sounds when making an expression
  • Talking with room chat and someone says something funny? Now able to laugh with them while typing
  • Fixed tossing animation on screens
  • Room chat gremlins now will only put you in time out if you're messaging too quickly, rather than after every message
  • Inspect Mode now allows you to do "roll" rotations with two fingers and rotating on iOS devices
  • Night vision goggles no longer required to see equipment you are holding on iOS devices
  • Reserved item slots now have a lock icon on iOS devices
  • No longer hiding your equipment on iOS devices, extra slot has reappeared
  • Fixed up selfie mode, say cheese!

Other spooky bugs crushed and improvements we made:

  • Fixed a shortcut in Stunt Runner so no one gets an early start
  • Fixed performance in ^Paintball.Spillway for Oculus Quest by removing the big scoreboard
  • Fixed rotation on iOS devices, should be snappy now!
  • Fixed being able to hit buttons while holding bows
  • Fixed not being able to drop offhand item on screen mode

RecTV mainenance request:

  • Something seems to be caught in the ventilation system, can someone please fish it out? It's getting a little stuffy in here.

All right, that’s everything for this update, but stay tuned! This is just the first of two major bug fixing and stability updates focused specifically on creative tools and games. Every day we’re blown away by the things you’re creating in Rec Room, and we want to make an earnest push to stabilize and improve the creative and play experience before we expand and move onto the next set of features and challenges together.

  • Course 5 - made the spinning hazard section less random, added collision to the environment walls so you don't leave the level.
  • Course 6 - Fixed a broken checkpoint near the top of the tower.

Mirror Store

You can now buy new clothing items directly from the mirror!

  • All clothing from the Watch Store is now available inside the clothing menu on the mirror.
  • New filters in the mirror menu: You can now filter clothing items by owned/purchasable and by rarity
  • You can now try on multiple clothing items at once!
  • You'll now get a warning popup when leaving your dorm if you're currently trying on any items (i.e. you're wearing items you don't own)
  • Set favorite item skins from the Backpack page in your Watch (while in any room!) instead of from the drawers in your dorm
  • Potion and Film items are now found under the "Other" tab on the Backpack page

We also made some other improvements with clothing and mirror menus!

  • Fixed bug where sometimes you would see duplicated clothing items in the mirror menu
  • Fixed bug where clicking on a clothing item wouldn't equip it when playing on Screens
  • Trying on an item fully replaces any non-trial item of the same type, so when the trial item is removed, it's no longer replaced with the previous non-trial item
  • When removing a shirt item, players are always assigned the white t-shirt, instead of being assigned a random shirt

New iOS Social Features!

We've added a bunch of features to make you much more expressive when playing on iOS (all these features are coming very soon(tm) to PS4 and PC screen mode). While doing this, we cleaned up the controls a bunch.

First, we have the new Wave control - touch and drag on the Wave control to make your avatar wave their hand around! Say hi!

You can tap on the Wave control to point instead - now touching and dragging will waggle your pointing finger! When pointing at something, tap the Action button to "laser point" it. For example, point at another player and tap the Action button to quickly pull up their profile (this is the same interaction as in VR).

Second, we have the new Pose control. Tap the Pose control to enter Pose mode. In this mode, you see your character in 3rd person view, and the Wave control affects your entire body. You can dance, pose for photos, etc. It's really fun =]

While in Pose mode, touch and hold the Pose control to select from five different pose sets. Try them all and see what you like best!

HIs6P7l

While in Pose mode, we activate the front facing TrueDepth camera (on supported devices) and track your head motion in real time. On devices without a TrueDepth camera, head motion is driven by moving/tilting your iOS device. You can toggle these features on or off in Watch > Settings > Gameplay ("AR controls" and "motion controls").

Tap the Pose control again to go back to normal mode (1st person).

In Normal mode, touch and hold the Pose control to initiate a social gesture - fist bump (party up!), high five, or shake hands (add friend).

iOS players can now react immediately to fist bumps, high fives, and hand shakes from all players (including VR players). In VR, just hold up your hand for a high five and we'll detect it.

Third, there are now buttons in the menu bar to trigger the Expresso facial expressions. Tap the button to make your avatar laugh, cry, etc.!

RZtWzH9

Fourth, we upgraded selfie mode to also use TrueDepth (if available) or motion controls to control your head. You can also tap and hold the Focus button for more control over your framing.

Fifth, we re-vamped how you handle objects on iOS. When you're holding an object in your left or right hand, you'll see the corresponding Object control appear.

Tap on the Object control to lightly toss the object in front of you. Swipe down on the Object control to drop the object directly downwards. Swipe up on the Object control to inspect the object.

While inspecting an object, you can drag to rotate, and pinch to move the object closer or further away.

Sixth, we put a convenient "favorite item" shortcut on the menu bar. By default, your Camera is favorited, so tap the favorite item button to access it. Go to Watch > Backpack and favorite your Maker Pen if you'd prefer quick access to that instead.

Plus lots more polish/tuning of controls on iOS as we gear up for full launch!

We also added more new quality of life updates and bug fixes!

  • Room Chat works properly this time, we swear =]
  • Fixed a Paintball bug where players could carry the flag while respawning
  • Prevented grenades from friendly firing in The Rise of Jumbotron

We added some new quality of life updates and bug fixes...

New Room Instance browser!

This is a new tool to help Creators, Co-Owners and Mods moderate their rooms. It shows you a bunch of details about each instance, including whether anybody with mod powers is already in that instance. You can also directly join a specific instance from this screen.

  • Comfort mode option in room warnings screen now remembers your previous choice
  • We fixed a bug where comfort mode could be wrongly enabled if you cancel your room switch after the room warnings screen

We implemented "safe mode" Dorm Room on non-VR platforms! This allows you to load the default Dorm Room in case your custom Dorm gets into a weird state. To activate this on

  • iOS: Launch menu > Profile > Safe Mode
  • Other Screens: Choose "Sign in to another Rec Room account", then toggle "Safe Mode"

New notifications on iOS:

  • You can now choose to get notified when you receive a new friend request

More bug fixes:

  • Fixed usernames being cut off on most platforms.
  • We took the Crescendo of the Blood Moon necklaces back from Dracula, and made sure your hard earned items are available in the mirror UI!

Rec Room PATCH for the "Stunt Runner" Edition[]

September 10, 2019

Just a couple of updates and bug fixes - here's what's new:

The Rec Center now has moderators! They can be identified by the new icon by the player name (crown with 1 line).

Room Bans

Creators and Co-Owners can now ban people from entering their rooms. Use this power wisely!

  • Access and manage the room ban list from This Room screen → Setup tab → Room Ban List.
  • You can bulk import players to the room ban list from your personal block list, or from an existing room you have ban power in. Importing will only add players, and never remove.
  • You can ban a player from one of your rooms by opening their profile page and pressing the "Room Ban" button (while you are in that room).

Players who are blocked by a Creator will no longer be blocked from that Creator’s rooms. Use the room ban list instead.

  • We have done a one time auto import of Creators' personal block list to their room ban lists to maintain the existing behavior.

Plus a bunch of polish items and bug fixes, including:

  • Added a prompt to tell screens players how to open the menu while carrying a boombox.
  • Fixed a bug where sometimes accepting a co-owner request would not register
  • Fixed an issue where other players' names would rotate towards the mirror instead of facing you

  • Updated Stunt Runner so players are no longer able to bump one another in the lobby
  • Fixed a hole in the back of the Stunt Runner lobby under the entrance
  • Adjusted a checkpoint in Stunt Runner Course 4 so you cant trigger it from outside the tower structure
  • Added sounds in the Stunt Runner levels to their respective volume mixers so they can be lowered

Rec Room UPDATE - the "Stunt Runner" Edition[]

September 5, 2019

Stunt Runner Steam News

We are stoked to introduce the brand new Rec Room Original game, Stunt Runner!

Stunt Runner is an obstacle-based, extreme sports game show set in Rec Room! In this high-speed obstacle course where every second counts, four contestants must sprint, climb, wall jump, mantle, and dodge hazards to survive. Pick the perfect route and execute flawlessly to set a record time and become leaderboard champs!

Join the fun by navigating to your Watch -> Play -> Featured -> #RecRoomOriginal -> Stunt Runner!

Locomotion

We're adding a whole bunch of new locomotion features in our latest #RRO game! In no particular order, here are the new features you have to play with:

  • Climbing
  • Wall Running
  • Sliding
    • If you have thumbsticks, click in the right stick while sprinting to slide
    • On a keyboard, press ctrl while sprinting to slide
    • If you’re on PSVR, press the upper, outer face button while sprinting to slide
  • Speed-boosting pickups
    • Run through them to get a temporary speed boost - woo!
  • Moving Platforms - that you move with!
    • Now you can jump onto moving platforms and expect to have a smooth experience as they move you through the world
  • Bounce Pads

And finally - for room creators, we’re adding climbing, wall running, bumping and sliding to room creation! We’re having a blast with Stunt Runner, but we think we've only scratched the surface of the experiences you can make with these new mechanics.

Wall Running: Enable by opening the watch and going to "This Room" -> "Setup" -> "Roles". Then set the "Can Wall Run" permission in the "Screens" and "Walk VR" role settings. Wall Running will then be available for any vertical surface to players with that room role.

Climbing: Enable by hitting the Configure tool on your Maker Pen, then selecting the object you wish to make climbable. You'll want to check the "Is Climbable" setting, which makes the object a climbable surface for all players. Note that an object cannot be Grabbable and Climbable at the same time.

Bumping: Enable by opening the watch and going to "This Room" -> "Setup" -> "Roles". There are two separate permissions you can set in "Screens" and "Walk VR" role settings:

  • Can Ram allows you to use your velocity to send other pushable players flying!
  • Can Be Pushed allows you to be pushed by other players. Enabling this will allow you to be launched by rammers, but also nudged when you and another player are in the same space.

Sliding: This is enabled by default for any downhill surface. If you are sprinting, use the slide input to gain an extra burst of speed. Further configuration options for this feature coming soon! These are only the first of many Stunt Runner related tools being made available to creators, so keep an eye on our coming releases!

Phew, what exciting stuff... but wait, there's more!

We made some changes to our Moderation Structure:

  • You can now access and manage your block list from your profile screen
  • New icons by the player name to differentiate between Creator (crown with 3 lines), Co-Owner (crown with 2 lines), and Host (crown)!
  • Poorly behaved players with too many reports will be temporarily blocked from the Rec Center. You can regain access by being excellent to other players elsewhere in the game!

Comfort Mode:

A few weeks back we shipped Comfort Mode to provide an option for motion-sensitive players to participate in walk-only rooms. There is still a ton of room for improvement here, so if you’re a motion-sensitive player, consider sending us suggestions for what might make it better for you. You can turn on Comfort Mode by navigating to your Watch > Settings > Gameplay > Comfort Options. We really appreciate your feedback!

Rec Room PATCH - for the "Try Before You Buy" Edition[]

August 20, 2019 - magglerock

Howdy y'all! First up, we're excited to share some updates to improve your player experience!

  • HoloHelpers now have visual subtitles and also tilt up/down to face the camera
  • There's now a "Voices I can hear" setting in Settings > Audio for more control over voice chat. This only affects who you hear; others can still hear you!
  • There's now a Help tab in the Settings screen which shows the controller mappings
  • You can apply Content Warnings to your custom room (This Room > Setup > General Setup > Content Warnings). Remember that rooms still must follow the Code of Conduct!
  • Banned players can no longer use the Maker Pen or Share Camera (so be good for goodness sake!)
  • Added a "NEW" icon above the Store button when there are new items available
  • Added a "NEW" icon above new items in the Watch Store and in the merch booth

We also adjusted how our ignore bubble works - check out the details below:

  • If you're getting too close to another player then they will fade out. This replaces the old behavior of fading out your own hands.
  • If a player invades your Ignore Buffer, their voice volume will fade out along with their avatar.
  • Fixed a bug with the Large Ignore Buffer where invading players would never completely fade out regardless of how near they approached.

And we fixed a few bugs!

  • Fixed an issue where the Weekly Challenge item would not appear at the end of the first-run tutorial
  • Fixed bug where "new" / wearing / lock icon intersected with the outfit item in the dorm room dresser
  • Fixed bug in Rec Royale where the "upgrade to elite" button was still present after successfully purchasing elite
  • Fixed bug where the input field was always invisible when trying to edit room tags
  • Fixed a bug where teleporters were being flung across rooms
  • Fixed an iOS issue where objects and avatars could appear overly shiny in certain contexts
  • Red indicator now appears when taking damage in games on iOS
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes the wrong icon would be used on the iOS touch UI
  • Fixed an issue where certain buttons on iOS were unpressable on the Maker Pen palette

Rec Room PATCH - for the "Try Before You Buy" Edition[]

August 13, 2019 - magglerock

Heads up... We now have recroom.com! We've started to migrate a bunch of things over to that domain. Againstgrav.com will continue to work for the time being, but eventually we plan to migrate everything over to recroom.com! Rec.net is unaffected by this change...

We've done a pretty major revision to "Comfort Mode". Comfort Mode is a VR-specific setting that can allow motion-sensitive players to experience a wide variety of locomotion types (e.g., walking, Rec Royale hang gliders, etc.). This feature has existed since we shipped Rec Royale as the "TV Mode Vehicles" setting. Comfort Mode replaces and considerably enhances "TV Mode Vehicles".

You can find Comfort Mode settings in Watch > Settings > Gameplay > Comfort Options. Comfort Mode can be set to:

  • Off (default) - in this case it does nothing!
  • Vehicle Only - in this case Comfort Mode will turn on automatically when you're in a vehicle (currently only the Rec Royale hang gliders... but we're planning ahead here people!). This emulates the old "TV Mode Vehicles" setting.
  • On - in this case it is on all the time. This is a new capability that means you can play the entire game with Comfort Mode if you want. This means that players who mostly use teleport can experiment with using Comfort Mode to experience walk-only rooms. In our internal testing, some of our most motion sensitive players have been able to play walk-only games using Comfort Mode. For now, you'll have to enable Comfort Mode manually, but in the next update we plan to add an prompt to switch it on automatically (and temporarily) if you're a teleporter going to a walk-only room.

Since different players have different levels of sensitivity, there are some additional settings to play with:

  • Mode - can be 2D or 3D. In 2D mode it's like Rec Room is playing on a TV in front of your face (that's why we used to call this "TV mode"). In 3D mode, the stereoscopic nature of the VR world is preserved. 3D mode adds some additional immersion at the risk of reducing comfort for some sensitive players.
  • Size - can be Small or Large. Small gives you a small view port that optimizes for comfort. Large gives you a substantially larger view port that increases immersion (while still limiting peripheral visual information).

OK, apart from Comfort Mode, we've also fixed a bunch of bugs:

  • Paintball - removed an invisible wall that was blocking a window on the Red side of Spillway
  • Rec Royale - repaired shipping container in Frontier Power that had its door halfway in the ground
  • Subrooms - removed "not yet supported" banner on "none" room when changing parent rooms.
  • Fixed a bug where "try to match me with non-juniors" toggle could be cleared after switching rooms.
  • Emails should now be sent from recroom.com.

Some fixes that only affect screen mode players:

  • Fixed an issue where UI icons would flicker when using weapons
  • Charged melee attacks are now much more reliable
  • Selecting an item from your backpack will now pick it up automatically
  • Point gesture no longer expires after two seconds

  • There's a new "Try" button on the Store page (in your Watch) that lets you try on items before you buy them!

  • You can only try on one item at a time...

Rec Room PATCH for the "Living in a Material World" Edition[]

July 23, 2019 - magglerock

Just another quick update with some new features and bug fixes!

First up, we've made some improvements to the Clone Tool:

  • Clone now supports clicking to select
  • Having a selection in clone now brings up clone specific handles

Other additions:

  • Clicking on handles in contexts like move, rotate, and scale have different functionality if it fits your needs
    • Move: Clicking on a handle in move, moves the object by its length once in the axis clicked (only on bounding box handles)

    • Scale: Clicking a scale handle now doubles the size of the object in the indicated direction
  • New selection material

Plus some bug fixes, including:

  • Fixed a bug that was preventing players from receiving hair dyes they had purchased and/or received as gifts. If you were in this state, you will now receive your hair dyes correctly (and the rest of your gift boxes that had been queued up behind them). Sorry about that!
  • Players can successfully purchase hair dyes again!
  • Fixed a bug that was causing neon colors and metal materials to display incorrectly in the streamer cam
  • Fixed several bugs with Circuits
  • Fixed an issue where avatars would sometimes display as invisible

Rec Room UPDATE - the “Get a Handle on Creation” Edition[]

July 2, 2019 - magglerock

This update adds a (much requested!) new way to Manipulate objects in Custom Rooms.... introducing Maker Pen Handles!

  • Handles allow for you to perform actions such as Move, Rotate, and Scale in a single axis instead of all at once.
  • This update doesn’t remove the ability to Move in all axes at once, but simply extends the functionality.
  • The other addition here is local axis manipulation. After rotating an Object you can now move it in local space.

So what's changed with the addition of Handles?

  • Local axis movement (on by default). The top right most toggle on the Maker Pen lets you switch between local space, and world space.
  • The text for Snap and Align have been swapped in for icons. Align is the left most toggle, and the Snap toggle is the center between Align, and local space.
  • You should be able to use Align in screen mode
  • While using the Move, Rotate or Scale tool, you can click on an object to Quick Select it and the new Handles pop up.
  • Drag a Handle in the desired direction to Modify it in a single axis.
  • For the old functionality, grab anywhere on the Object to modify it.
  • If you go in and edit a Maker Pen shape, you can use the Scale tool to get the same functionality as the Manipulate tool.
  • While in the Move, Rotate and Scale tool, you can tap the trigger to select an Object, clearing the previous selection. To multi-select you must switch to the select tool.

We've also added some quality of life improvements to Circuits:

  • Circuit inputs now support default values - use the Configure tool to assign a constant. No Variable Chip required!
  • Improved support for tooltips and wiring of circuit groups

And a new Room Chat Menu!

  • Use it to chat with other players around you!
  • For VR players, the menu is on the underside of the watch
  • For screens players, find the chat menu in Quick Comms

Plus a couple of bug fixes, including:

  • Fixed an issue where the Circuit board "+" pins were pink
  • Fixed the KREQ Sign in Frontier Island
  • Added functionality to support up to 40 teams for custom games
  • Fixed a few bugs with the Fade World feature while in Edit mode. Sorry about that!
  • Fixed a bug where platform locked items could cause display issues

And finally, we're beyond excited to announce that PlayStation®4 players can now purchase Rec Tokens!

  • Find them in your Watch -> Store -> Get Tokens
  • Note that Rec Tokens purchased on PC and items purchased with Rec Tokens on PC won't be accessible on PlayStation® (and vice versa) - though earned items will always be available on all platforms!
  • Please direct any issues with real money purchases to tokens@againstgrav.com; anything not due to a real money transaction should go to support@againstgrav.com

Rec Room PATCH - for the "Rainbow Connection" Edition[]

June 6, 2019 - magglerock

Just a quick update to fix some things we broke with our last update =]

  • Fixed a bug that prevented Screens players from reviving each other in Quests, Rec Royale. Sorry about that!
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Screens players from partying up with each other.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the scoreboard from opening at the end of Quest For the Golden Trophy.

Rec Room UPDATE - the "Rainbow Connection" Edition[]

June 4, 2019 - magglerock

We’re back! This is the first of what we hope are regular weekly updates now that we’re through the bulk of the “make Rec Room work on Quest” work we had to do in the first half of this year. We really appreciate your patience while we did that, and we're super stoked to get back into the swing of things =]

OK here’s what's new in this update...

First we have some Oculus Quest specific stuff:

  • Quest for the Golden Trophy is now available on the Oculus Quest!
  • We’ve improved lighting on the Quest… this will especially improve the appearance of neon objects in custom rooms.
  • Fixed an issue that would make your hands appear jittery… we just had something screwed up, sorry :-/

You can now purchase Hair Dye directly from the Dorm Room mirror appearance menu!

  • The Dorm Room appearance menu allows you to buy the items directly from it by popping the Store page
  • The menu shows a locked icon for the colors you do not own, and refreshes it once it is purchased
  • The Watch Store now properly filters permanent hair dyes with the potion filter

Lots of creation work in this update...

  • We've added 17 new Maker Pen Colors (and corresponding neons)! Just in time for Pride month =] There are now 33 colors total to choose from.
    • Find them in Maker Pen menu, along with all our original colors
    • We added tooltips to the color palette menu to help disambiguate colors
  • We found and fixed a color correction bug that was affecting all existing maker pen shapes. So, we fixed it. This may make the colors in your room appear more saturated (and maybe a little darker, depending on circumstances). Sorry for the unexpected change! Many of the new colors are less-saturated options, so you can go back and re-adjust if you need to.

Some other color-related updates...

  • There’s now a Recolorable Marker available in the palette menu.
    • This is a whiteboard marker that can be colored using the Recolor tool!
  • Stage Lights and Beacons can now be colored using the Recolor tool
  • Please note that we made a change to the Beacon object to align its color palette with other circuit-colored objects (lights, emitters). So they now all react to colors in the same way. This will change the color of your beacons, so you’ll need to re-adjust those too.

We made some updates to the Freeze tool:

  • There’s now an "Is Grabbable" setting on all objects! This lets you define whether an (unfrozen) object can be picked up by players who are not holding a Maker Pen. You can change it by using the "Configure" tool on any object. This means you no longer have to freeze objects simply because you don’t want players picking them up.
  • Provided a setting in Maker Pen menu to let you make objects grabbable (or not) by default. (Palette > Settings > Create grabbable objects)
  • Maker Pen Objects can now be unfrozen using the Select tool by double-selecting the object! Attempting to select a frozen object provides this as feedback.
  • Added better error messages when trying to connect/disconnect frozen objects. (Note: You are allowed to attach Gizmos to frozen objects)
  • Fixed bug that allowed you to disconnect wires connected to frozen objects
  • Fixed bug where trying to select a frozen object would sometimes drop your previous selections

We've also updated the Manipulate and Select tools:

  • We improved the Select tool to reduce frustrating deselects, and to provide a way to easily select volumes of objects
  • New Select Sphere - using the Select tool, click and drag to select or deselect objects inside a sphere
    • The size of the sphere depends on distance (to allow precise selection up close, and big areas far away)
    • You can adjust the size of the sphere in Palette > Settings
    • In VR the slider can be set to ‘analog’ to change size based on trigger pressure
  • To clear a selection, click and hold away from objects, or double click on a single object
    • Use Undo to get back the cleared selection
    • Double click any object part of a cleared selection to get the last selection back
  • Basic selection (tap and double tap) now works in the Move, Rotate, and Scale tools.

The Wire tool also got some love!

  • The Wire tool is now magnetic, making it easier to target pins
  • We now show an icon to preview what will happen if you complete the current wiring operation:
    • Circle = you’ll make this connection
    • X = you’ll remove this wire
    • Hand = invalid connection (nothing will happen)
  • You can now multi-select Chips or Objects to create multiple Wires in one operation!
  • The Wire tool tooltip has been replaced with a quicker info display:
    • We new show the pin info on both start and end connection.
    • We show the incoming or outgoing values.
  • Signals are now displayed for the user.
    • Quick pulse on the connection line As an outgoing value that stays displayed for a few frames

Plus a BUNCH of optimizations and bug fixes across all platforms, including:

  • Streamlined boot sequence!
  • You can now opt to show your password as you type while logging in
  • Improvements to LOD system (improves appearance of custom rooms - especially on PS4 and Quest)
  • Tweaked new lighting system to reduce lighting artifacts
  • Fixed facial features clipping in share cam pictures
  • We did a general clean up of the Maker Pen palette settings menu (just making it a little more sane)
  • You can now equip two gloves of the same type but different colors!
  • Share cam filters no longer show up in the preview (they were showing up wrongly previously), only in the captured picture
  • Fixed bug where screen players would see a revive teammate prompt before the teammate could be revived
  • Fixed bug where event creators were unable to instant kick other players from their event
  • Fixed bug where the "Disable Auto Mic Muting" room setting wasn't working properly
  • Fixed bug where holotars were facing the wrong direction
  • Fixed bug where samplers weren't playing correctly
  • Fixed bug where players would sometimes not see a HUD when they were supposed to
  • Screens - Fixed bug where screen players could get stuck in the sprinting animation
  • PS4 screens - Fixed a bug where keyboard wouldn’t close when attempting to log into an existing Rec Room account
  • Dodgeball - Fixed bug where dodgeballs would appear to fly in weird paths for players not on court
  • Fixed a bug where sandbox buttons could become unresponsive if an item was dropped on it and then removed without touching the button
  • Fixed bug where gizmo-connected maker pen objects would sometimes shift for multiple players
  • Added setting to update an object's rotation when using object respawner
  • Fixed a bug that made Maker Pen colors affect Trigger Volume visibility and brightness (oops)

Patch for the Oculus Quest release! (from reddit)[]

May 27, 2019 - mamamonkey

We are very happy to share that our team has tracked down a very annoying bug that was causing some Oculus Quest users to go to a black screen while trying to log in (and other places while using the keyboard)! Please update Rec Room if you’re using the Oculus Quest.

Oculus Quest details and update schedule (from reddit)[]

May 15, 2019 - shawncw1

Hey everyone!

Here are some more details for Rec Room on Oculus Quest. Partially edited from a post I made a few weeks ago.

Rec Room will be in the Oculus Quest store on launch day! For free of course just like everywhere else :)

Quest players will have the ability to buy tokens right off the bat since we already had the Oculus payments infrastructure in place for Rift + their approval. (We're still waiting on Sony for commerce approval on PS4, we know it sucks :( we thought it would have been approved months ago but here we are...)

Quest is fully cross platform - log in with your Rec Room account that you've already created on PS4, PSVR, Steam, Rift, Vive, etc. And play with anyone across any platform and any player type (screen mode or VR - you can play Rec Room on PS4 and Steam without a headset)

Initially Rec Room on quest won't include every Rec Room activity. Still unknown how many of them we are going to have ready for launch but we're trying our best to get as many of them ready (optimized and running at frame rate) as possible. Those that don't make it before launch will probably go out later, depending on the results we're seeing from the initial rooms when it comes to performance.

UPDATE, here's the list for launch:

  • The Maker Room and any player rooms built on the Maker Room, clones off of Maker Rooms, anything built on top of a template room or base room that started with the Maker Room, etc. Same thing for all of the other rooms listed below. Combined these account for 75% of all player created rooms, so 75% of all player rooms will be available at launch. You can also
  • Rec Center
  • Dorm Room
  • Paintball
  • Charades
  • Dodgeball
  • Paddleball

The new lighting update that just went out does work on Quest! In fact its that new rendering engine that allows us to move a lot of Rec Room onto Quest. If you have other QUESTions let us know!

Due to the way we have to manage Quest roll out we wont be able to push any updates to all platforms for a few weeks :( But the good news is we're building up a lot of new features and improvements here in the office that will hit once we are able to ship again. Sorry for the delay! However there should be a bunch of new really cool rooms hitting the hot list soon with the Time Travel 2019 contest about to enter the play phase: https://rec.net/contest/timetravel2019 Be sure to check those rooms out by searching #TimeTravel2019 in the room browser or just scanning the live and hot lists once the play phase starts this coming Monday May 20th.

I hope that answers a few questions. Cheers!

EDITS:

There will be no quests on the Quest at launch, but Golden Trophy and Jumbotron are coming Joon™ sorry I mean Soon™

You can create inventions and rooms on the quest. Maker Pen works great. Initially you will only be able to build off of the rooms we will have at launch though. But almost everyone uses the Maker Room as their base anyway so this should cover most creators at launch.

It's good to be back! We've spent the past few weeks undergoing a pretty massive update to our lighting and rendering tech, so expect some fresh paint! We hope you enjoy the updates, and let us know if you run into anything... weird =]

Speaking of game changers, we're excited to introduce our headline feature - new Dynamic Light Gadgets! More details below, but first check out the before/after comparison shots [to the right] for a preview.

Not too shabby, eh? Give 'em a go yourself with the new Point Light gadget!

  • The Point Light is a single light that shines in all directions (like a light bulb).
  • It can be shining at all times, or turned on and off with a circuit signal.
  • It can be customized in 3 ways:
    • Color: The color of the light can be modified with either the Maker Pen Recolor tool, or with a circuit signal.
    • Intensity: The brightness of the light. Can be modified with either the Maker Pen Configure tool, or with a circuit signal.
    • Range: The area the light covers. Can be modified with either the Maker Pen Configure tool, or with a circuit signal.
  • Find it in the Maker Pen Palette, under Gadgets -> Other.

And don't miss the new Spotlight!

  • The Spotlight is a cone of light that shines forward from the bulb (like a flashlight).
  • It can be customized in the same way as the point light, with one additional setting:
    • Angle: In Spotlight terms, the range is how far the light goes and the angle is how wide it is (in degrees). Can be modified with either the Maker Pen Configure tool, or with a circuit signal.
  • Find it in the Maker Pen Palette, under Gadgets -> Other

In addition to the general sprucing, we also underwent some pretty substantial performance optimizations:

  • Everything should be running smoother now, especially on PS4!
  • We've re-tuned the various quality settings, so Fastest should now run even faster (at the expense of certain visual effects). EDIT: Actually we removed "Fastest" completely, and re-tuned the others...

Plus a bunch of updates, including:

  • You may start encountering some Oculus Quest players... please make them feel welcome!
  • We've added neon Maker Pen colors! We hope you enjoy them as much as have been =]
  • We also added an Outer Space mood to the Maker Room: https://imgur.com/GlYGPFN
  • Various weapon animations were added back in!
  • You can now shoot through the separations in ladders.
  • It's spring again, and somebody closed the Rec Center window =P
  • Added Charades Pen to Maker Pen palette (Props -> Creative)
  • Added BeeDM (Radio Edit) to the Radio
  • Object-Player Mapping chip's "Last Held Player" output has changed. Instead of changing current player output when an object is picked up, it now outputs the previous holder's ID until the object changes hands.
  • Updated Stage Light colors to match the order of other circuit-colored objects (Emitter, Lights, Beacon). This means the default color is red, and circuit signals are now assigned in the same order as other objects (0 = red, 1 = orange and so on). If you're using Stage Lights, you'll probably need to go adjust your object's color after this ship. Sorry about that!

And some bug fixes, including:

  • Improved precision of Maker Pen shape positions.
  • Fixed issue with Delay and Timer chips losing data when players leave the room.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented circuit-driven color objects (Emitter, Lights, Beacon) from rendering in black, the last value in the color palette. Now you can! The corresponding circuit signal is '15'.
  • Fixed a bug in Clear Cut where you could see through rock meshes by getting really close to them (especially near the blue side flag).

Rec Room PATCH - for the "Gifting" edition[]

March 19, 2019 - gribbly

  • Fixed issue where melee weapons didn't work correctly in Quests (and other rooms)
  • Fixed issues where PSVR players could turn into a weird clump in the Rec Center after a while (!? ok)
  • Tweaked memory settings on PS4 to improve stability

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://www.againstgrav.com/community/

Rec Room UPDATE - the “Gifting” Edition![]

March 14, 2019 - magglerock

It's good to be back! Thank you all for your patience while we worked out the kinks in this update; there's a ton of new stuff, and we can't wait to share it with y'all... so let's get to it!

You can now send Gifts to your friends! This has a been a much-requested feature, so we’re excited to get it out there!

The important details:

  • Anything you can buy with tokens, you can now send as a gift (if you are over level 15)!
  • Navigate to Watch > Store and find the item you would like send as a gift. Choose "Give as Gift" and select the friend you would like to send it to! They’ll receive a nicely gift-wrapped box.
  • You can choose to make your gift anonymous if you like
  • You also cannot give someone something they already own!

A few updates for Screen Mode:

  • Revised login and registration flow for Screen Mode players. Much cleaner and more sane (we hope).
  • Loading screen tips between rooms - all kinds of helpful info here. This is something we plan to bring to VR as soon as possible, but for now if you’d like to see the loading tips you’ll need to boot the game in Screen Mode. Which is now easier, because...
  • Launching in Screen Mode is now supported natively on Oculus. In your Oculus Library, click on the “...” and choose “Start in Desktop Mode”

This update is also includes a bunch of new stuff for Creators. We are really excited about this…

As we’ve mentioned a few times in various AMAs and forum posts, a bunch of the AG team (including most of the art team) is very hard at work optimizing Rec Room for some exciting new platforms. This means that we’re currently limited in our ability to do things like “make another JumboTron” or “update Rec Royale”. Thanks for being patient with us here, we know the updates are little slower during this phase =]

So, with the art team otherwise occupied, we got creative with the Creation tools!

Basically we went all in on having our AG designers have build a #community room! The magnificent @ry-guy and the wonderful @meriesa teamed up to build ^CapturePoint, a new PVP-style room where three teams battle to control the Capture Point in the corridors and catwalks of faraway Star Station.

This was a really fun and interesting exercise for us. ^CapturePoint is built using only tools that are available to you - yes YOU! It’s also copyable, so you are welcome to remix it, learn from it, improve it, etc. We’re also sharing a bunch of the stuff that got built as inventions that you can bring into existing rooms.

Now, we did cheat a little bit. As @ry-guy and @meriesa were building, we also added a bunch of new Creation tools… based partly on what was needed for ^CapturePoint, and partly addressing some long-standing requests from creators.

Here’s an overview of the new Creation tools in this update. Ready? Strap in because it’s a long list:

First, we've added a new Games Rules chip!

  • This chip exposes a bunch of the internal Rec Room game systems for use in your rooms.
  • This includes stuff like health/damage, HUDs, reviving rules, spawning with/without various kinds of equipment, team radios, etc - in all there are 19 pages (!) of settings for you to tweak! Check out the details here!
  • Note you can have multiple Game Mode chips in your room. Each one will appear as a mode on the scoreboard. The mode selected on the scoreboard will correspond to the active Game Mode chip.
  • You can find the Game Rules chip in Maker Pen > Palette > Gadgets > Other Gadgets (and use the Maker Pen "Configure" tool to access the settings).
  • Note that existing rooms will automatically have a Game Rules chip added to it, as that’s how the system works now. The Game Rules chip will be near the spawn point for the room. If you have trouble finding it, or run into any trouble with the Game Rules chip, please email support@againstgrav.com and include “Custom Room Issue” in the subject line. We’ll get back to you as quick as we can. You’re also welcome to ping us on Discord/Reddit/wherever. We want to help!

Next, we're stoked to introduce the State Machine chip!

  • This chip makes it really easy to manage any kind of state behavior - whether it's as simple as "door open/door closed", or as complex as managing the states for a custom game mode.
  • Find it in Maker Pen > Palette > Gadgets > Other Chips. The basic flow for using the State Machine is to place the State Machine chip, then add States. Use the Wire tool to set the default state, and to define which states connect to which other states. You can also use the wire tool to connect things like buttons or trigger volumes to the state transitions. Basically, use the Wire tool to connect everything together.
  • The State Machine chip is extremely powerful; we recommend anyone interested in implementing custom behaviors check it out!

We've also added the ability to pack your circuits into Circuit Boards!

  • This makes large, unruly collections of wired-together chips into a single neat Circuit Board object.
  • You can pack/unpack circuits using the same "Edit/Done Editing" flow as editing Maker Pen shapes.
  • Circuit Boards also let you protect your circuits when sharing them as an Invention - if you include a Circuit Board in a "Use Only" Invention, other players aren't able to unpack it.
  • To create a Circuit Board, use your Maker Pen to Select several Chips, click [...] to open the context menu and select "Create Circuit Board"!

But wait, there's more! We've updated the shape bevels (i.e., what the edges look like when you're drawing shapes)!

  • Shape bevels are now "smart" - they are not simply scaled with the shape. The net result is that large shapes now have sharper edges, a much requested adjustment.
  • This will not affect existing rooms, but newly-created shapes will have the new bevel behavior

And we've upgraded the Audio Sampler:

  • You can now specify start and end offsets for much tighter control over your sounds.
  • You can also specify which channel it will play through (SFX, music, voice, ambient).
  • Screens players can now record audio samplers and holotars using the context action button.

Whew, almost there! We also tweaked and added a bunch of other creation stuff, including:

  • There's a new Beacon object, perfect for highlighting objectives in your games! Place and scale it like any prop, then you can use circuit inputs to dynamically control the height, color and visibility of the beacon.
  • SFX chip now has a volume setting in its Config menu.
  • There's a new "Player Revive" chip. It works like the Player Hit chip - it sends a circuit signal (including player ID) whenever a player is revived.
  • Breakable objects (like plates, bottles, jugs) now respawn by default (if you want them to break forever, tweak that setting in the new Game Rules chip).
  • Laser weapons are now the PvP-tweaked Laser Tag variants (rather than the Jumbotron variants). This won't affect existing placements, but new placements will use the new variants.
  • Trigger volumes are now player role-aware.
  • Teleport distance and walking jump height are now configurable in room roles.

Plus a bunch of bug fixes, including:

  • You can now cleanly exit the app! No more force close =]
  • Fixed issue where there could be messy graphical glitches on photos.
  • Fixed bug with weapon reloaders getting "stuck" inside trigger volumes.
  • VR players can directly unequip avatar items in the dorm again (sorry about that).
  • Screens players can directly equip/unequip costumes using the context action button.
  • Screens players can record holotars/samplers using the context action button.
  • Audio samplers now correctly support 0 volume when circuit-connected.
  • Fixed maker pen targeting for audio samplers and object respawners.
  • Respawn point object default to landing directly on it, with configuration option to smart auto-choose within an area.
  • Added tooltips for connection tool in screen mode.
  • Removed "flicker" behavior from looping holotars.
  • Added Shield to Player Stat chips.
  • And more!

Whew, this is a big one. We’ve done an unusually large amount of testing (for us) to make sure existing rooms aren’t negatively affected by these changes, but if you do run into any issues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Please email support@againstgrav.com and include “Custom Room Issue” in the subject line. You’re also welcome to ping us directly on Discord, Reddit, etc. We want to help!

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://www.againstgrav.com/community/

Thanks for playing Rec Room! As always, don't hesitate to give us your feedback =]

The Game Rules chip and what you can do with it![]

Palette configure game rules

March 9, 2019 - Carthage

Hey everyone! We're still working on getting the next update ready to go, but we thought it would be fitting to give you all a deeper peek into one of the new features which /u/gribbly mentioned a few days ago - the new Game Rules chip. Placing these chips in your room lets you define different game modes which can be rotated through on the scoreboard (just like how Paintball, Disc Golf, and Charades let you toggle between their different game modes) and gives you the ability to change a ton (19 pages!) of settings about how those games work.

Gribbly's post has some details at the bottom about how this will work for existing rooms. Broadly speaking, we don't think this new system will cause issues for most rooms and ideally, any rooms which are broken by this change will be able to be fixed quickly by tweaking a few options in the Game Rules chip.

With that in mind... we thought you might be interested in seeing the list of options you'll soon have access to to customize your rooms. Here's everything that's now tweakable:

  • Mode Name - sets the name of your gamemode on the scoreboard
  • Manual Game Start Min Player Count - How many players need to be in the game before the "Start" button on the scoreboard lights up?
  • Manual Game Start Min Team Count - How many teams must have players on them before the "Start" button on the scoreboard lights up?
  • Manual Game Start Min Team Size - How many players must be on each team before the "Start" button on the scoreboard lights up.
  • Automatic Game Start Supported (Toggle) - Should the game start automatically when certain conditions are met? (Like Rec Royale Squads)
  • Automatic Game Start Min Player Count - How many players must be in the game before it starts automatically?
  • Automatic Game Start Min Team Count - How many teams must have players before the game starts automatically?
  • Automatic Game Start Min Team Size - How many players must be on each team before the game starts automatically?
  • Play Pre-Game Voice-Over (Toggle) - "Press the start button on the scoreboard to play"
  • Play Results Voice-Over (Toggle) - "You win"/"You lose"

Many of you are likely very excited by the large degree of customization these options afford, and we are too! We think that exposing all of these things to creators will allow you to build things that, dare I say it, impress us even more than what's already out there. We're stoked to get it out to you soon.

If you've got questions on any of these - what they do, what they don't do - post a reply and we'll do our best to elaborate. We're sorry that this update is taking a bit longer than usual, but hang in there! We think it'll be worth the wait!

The next update - preview of new creation tools[]

March 5, 2019 - gribbly

We've been hard at work on next update, and it's almost cooked! We're deep into the testing and bug-fixing phase (yes, we do fix bugs!) so it's "some small number of days" away... we're not quite sure how many.

While we wait for the bug fixes, I wanted to provide a preview of the new creation features that are in this update. There's a bunch of new stuff. In some cases the changes may require some tweaks to your existing rooms - we've worked hard to avoid this for the most part. I've listed the known issues at the bottom, and our ongoing testing is largely about squeezing out any remaining issues.

Before I get to the details, let me talk about update frequency. Traditionally we've shipped an update every two weeks or so, but we're going a little slower right now. This is because a big chunk of the team (especially the art team) is super busy adapting the game for new platforms. It's a bunch of work, but the results are very exciting =] More on all that soon... point is we'll get back to our two week update schedule once we're done.

OK, let's get into the new creation tools... strap in because there's a lot to talk about! (BTW, we'll be posting How To videos for many of these features when the update arrives)

  • We've updated the shape bevels (i.e., what the edges look like)! Shape bevels are now "smart" - they are not simply scaled with the shape. The net result is that large shapes now have sharper edges, a much requested adjustment. This will not affect existing rooms, but newly-created shapes will have the new bevel behavior. It won't be in for this update, but we are likely to add a new "soft cube" shape so you can still have the rounder "soft" bevels on large objects if that's what you want. Please give us feedback once the update is out - we're keen to hear what you think of the new behavior.
  • We've added a new "State Machine" chip. This makes it really easy to manage any kind of state behavior... whether it's as simple as "door open/door closed" or as complex as managing the states for a custom game mode. We realized that a big chunk of game programming is basically implementing and controlling state machines, so we wanted to make it much faster and easier to work with this important concept in Rec Room. The State Machine chip is extremely powerful, we recommend anyone interested in implementing custom behaviors check it out! Find it in Maker Pen > Palette > Gadgets > Other Chips.
  • We've added the ability to pack your circuits into "Circuit Boards". This makes large, unruly collections of wired-together chips into a single neat Circuit Board object. You can pack/unpack circuits using the same "Edit/Done Editing" flow as editing Maker Pen shapes. Packing your chips into a Circuit Board makes them a bit cheaper (saving you some ink), and definitely makes it easier to keep things organized!
  • Circuit Boards also let you protect your circuits when sharing them as an Invention - if you include a Circuit Board in a "Use Only" Invention, other players aren't able to unpack it. So they can't see or change the circuit, but they can use it.
  • We've added a new "Game Rules" chip that exposes a bunch of the internal Rec Room game systems for use in your rooms. This includes stuff like health, HUDs, reviving rules, spawning with/without various kinds of equipment, team radios, etc. In all there are 19 pages (!) of settings for you to tweak. You can find the Game Rules chip in Maker Pen > Palette > Gadgets > Other Gadgets. Use the Maker Pen "Configure" tool to access the settings.
  • You can have multiple Game Rules chips in your room. Each one will appear as a mode on the scoreboard. The mode selected on the scoreboard will correspond to the active Game Rules chip.
  • Scoreboards are now proper sandbox props... so you can move them, delete them, add new ones, scale them.
  • There's a new Scoreboard Setup chip that lets you rename the scoring units in your room if you want something other than the standard "point".
  • We've upgraded the Sampler - you can now specify start and end offsets for much tighter control over your sounds. You can also specify which channel it will play through (SFX, music, voice, ambient) which means it will respect player settings (e.g., if you've got music turned down in settings, Samplers playing in that channel will also be turned down).
  • Breakable objects (like plates, bottles, jugs) now respawn by default. If you want them to break forever, tweak that setting in the new Game Rules chip.
  • Laser weapons are now the PvP-tweaked Laser Tag variants (rather than the Jumbotron variants). This won't affect existing placements, but new placements will use the new variants.
  • Trigger volumes are now player role-aware.

Here are some important things to know about the transition to the new “Game Rule chip” based system:

  • For new rooms, you’ll need to manually add a Game Rule chip.
  • Existing rooms will automatically have a Game Rule chip next to the scoreboard, with relevant settings automatically applied. If you’re not running any game logic in your room, it’s safe to delete this chip.
  • Rooms cloned from Rec Room Originals and customized via the Game Setup menu (which no longer exists), will need their settings re-applied via the Game Rules chip that has been spawned next to the scoreboard. So if you cloned ^Paintball and tweaked it to spawn players with bows, you’ll need to make that change again and re-save your room. Sorry about that, but it takes only a minute and it unlocks huge amounts of new stuff for you to play with!
  • If you were using the old “Game Duration” setting in the (now defunct) Game Setup menu, you’ll need to re-configure this using the new Scoreboard Setup chip.
  • We are testing existing rooms with the new tools to make sure everything keeps working seamlessly. If you own a popular room we may reach out to you to work with you if we find an issue. You can also just reply in this thread if you have any concerns and I’ll check it over the next couple of days to answer questions!

OK that's it! Looking forward to shipping the new update ASAP... BTW there's more in it that just the list above... I'm staying focused on creation stuff today =]

Rec Room MINI UPDATE for the “Published Inventions” Edition![]

February 14, 2019 - magglerock

We're stoked to announce that Rec Tokens are (finally =P) available for purchase on Steam and Oculus (coming soon for PlayStation®)!

  • While playing via Steam or Oculus, find Rec Tokens for purchase in your Watch > Store > Get Tokens
  • Note that due to Sony policies, Rec Tokens purchased on PC and items purchased with Rec Tokens on PC won't be accessible on PlayStation® (and vice versa) - though earned items will always be available on all platforms!
  • If you have any issues with a purchase, please reach out to tokens@againstgrav.com

Plus we've got some updates to the screen mode Quick Select menu:

  • While playing in screens mode, hold the "Backpack" button (Triangle, Y, or ~ depending on your platform) to see the tools you have equipped.
  • Move the left stick and release the button to swap to that tool.
  • This also includes quick access to the share camera, maker pen, and Rec Royale map.
  • Tapping the Backpack button will switch tools as usual.

And a few bug fixes to round it out =]

  • Bulletin boards no longer render on top of the watch menu!
  • Fixed a bug that allowed you to fire guns through walls, fences, etc.

Rec Room UPDATE - the “Published Inventions” Edition![]

February 7, 2019 - magglerock

This is a super exciting update for us - check out what's new:

  • You can now publish your Inventions to share with other players!
  • There's a new Inventions tab in the store, where you can find Inventions published by other players and download them to your Maker Pen palette!
  • When you publish an Invention, you can choose what permissions it has (giving you control over how other players can use it). The permissions are:
  • Publish (the default): Other players can make major changes to this Invention, then publish the result as a new Invention. Choose this permission if you’re cool with variations of your Invention being published in the store.
  • Use Only: Other players can’t make major changes to this Invention. They also can’t create a new Invention that contains any part of it. Choose this permission if you want don’t want people copying/modifying your Invention.
  • Edit and Save: Other players can make major changes to this Invention, but they can’t create a new Invention that contains any part of it. Use this permission if you don’t mind people adapting your Invention for your needs, but you don’t want them to republish the changes.
  • You can also set permissions on an Invention without publishing it first - find this in the Invention's Setup menu!

Screen mode creation has had a major revision to make it easier and more fun to create with! We'd love to hear feedback on it!

  • You now use the Maker Pen in first person and have access to the majority of the building tools and options (there are some missing pieces yet, we'll clean them up soon...)
  • Follow the onscreen prompts for the various buttons and options!
  • Like in VR mode, if you fly while holding the maker pen you can clip through objects. This makes building much easier!

Plus a few other fun creation updates:

  • We're excited to share the new self-scaling tool! This is experimental and only in VR so far, but we're excited to hear what you think! You can toggle this mode on in the Maker Pen Palette > Settings menu, and use the grip triggers on Oculus/Vive, and upper outer buttons on PSVR (left hand square, right hand triangle)!
  • The Maker Pen tubes got some major updates! Set the number of sides, the roundness and the width of your drawings. Keep connecting to the end of tubes for precise creations and use the manipulate tool to move control points around for that final tweak.

But wait, there's more! Screen mode players can now fly!

  • Access to flying is configured exactly the same as for VR players (i.e., it's a Room permission).
  • To start or stop flying, double tap the jump button.
  • If you want to try it out, here's the incredibly intuitive and easy process to enable flying in your Dorm Room: Open your Watch, tap This Room > Setup > Roles, then tap the gear icon for "Dorm Room". In the Shared settings, tap Override on the "Can Fly" option, then move the slider to "Yes". You may want to save the room after doing this so you don't have to do it again! Could this flow be made simpler? Nope. This is fine.
  • We now have to keep updating this flow, it's totally fine

And that's not all!

  • All quests are now in first person mode for screens players!
  • The Report Player screen got an ease of use update - there are now dropdowns with canned report categories!
  • The Code of Conduct got a spruce =]
  • Melee weapons in Isle of the Lost Skulls now automatically lock to your hands

Plus a bunch of bug fixes, including:

  • A bunch of PS4 crash mitigations! Let us know if you continue to experience performance problems on PS4.
  • Fixed issue that would cause all room saves in a room session to spin indefinitely
  • Added back snapping and shape preview for trigger volumes
  • Fixed some bugs with the layout of dorm dresser items

Rec Room UPDATE - the "Social Dorm Edition"[]

January 18, 2019 - magglerock

Before we dive into the first update of 2019, let's take a moment to appreciate what a fantastic 2018 Rec Room had! Check out our 2018 in Review post for details. It truly was an amazing year, and each and every one of you played a part in that - so thank you! We can't wait to see what 2019 has in store for Rec Room =]

Without further ado, let's dive into the update!

  • You can now customize and save your Dorm Room!
  • You can save the state of your Dorm Room by going to This Room > Save
  • This saves the location of all objects in the room (including maker pen objects)
  • Next time you go to your Dorm Room, the saved state will be restored
  • Use the button in the upper right hand corner of the login profile select screen to toggle "Safe Mode", to load the default dorm room without any of your saved customizations - useful if you accidentally save in a bad state and get stuck!
  • Note that Junior players cannot save their Dorm Rooms

And that's not all! You can now invite other players to your Dorm Room!

  • You can invite up to 3 other players to join you in your Dorm Room!
  • Players can request to join you in your Dorm (the Go To button will send an invite request)
  • Juniors, unregistered players, and players under moderation cannot be invited to a Dorm Room
  • You can instant kick everyone from your Dorm Room at any time via the “Evict All” button on the home screen of your Watch

Another big update - screens mode is now a first person play experience!

  • This is a work in progress, so feedback is welcome!
  • First person mode also means you can now manipulate objects (so you can play all your favorite escape rooms!)
  • Just pick an object up and carry it around - you can use controls to rotate/manipulate/etc
  • Note some objects specifically require you to press “Manipulate” first to do so (such as basketballs, drinking bottles, etc)

Next up, we’re excited to announce that rooms can now optionally allow Junior players to visit!

  • Junior access if OFF by default; creators can opt in by changing the setting (find it in This Room > General Setup)
  • This means that Juniors can now see and browse #community rooms in the watch
  • Please note that Juniors still cannot create, share or publish rooms, use the Maker Pen, or visit ^charades

There’s more... we heard you loud and clear (so, so loud =P) - we’d like to introduce the Auto Mic Muting feature!

  • Microphone spam above a certain level triggers a warning, causing other players to hear you at a reduced volume
  • If mic spam continues after the warning, you are force muted (other players can't hear you)
  • If the spam volume is reduced, the force mute will end
  • Note you can disable this feature in user created rooms, for all your sweet sweet DJ needs (find the setting in This Room > Setup > General Setup > Disable Auto Mic Muting)

This update also includes some (minor) updates to the Rec Center!

  • We added an information kiosk in the middle of the Rec Center, to better break up the larger space
  • We also added full Ping-Pong Tables, and another Basketball Hoop!
  • We also moved around the Merch Booth, Puzzles & Art, the Mirror, the Community Board and Dart Board
  • We hope you enjoy these changes to our Rec Center!

Plus we've updated Grenade behavior in some activities - note we're reworking how Grenades work overall, so this is a work in progress and does not necessarily reflect what final functionality will be! Feedback welcome =]

  • In Laser Tag, Rec Royale and JumboTron Grenades do not have friendly fire (but can hit yourself)
  • In Paintball, Grenades act as they always have

But wait, there’s still more!

  • There is now a "Can Save Invention" permission, so room owners can allow Maker Pen use in their rooms (but prevent people from making inventions)
  • We added paging for outfit items in your dorm
  • You can now merge shapes into costumes! To do so, select a costume and some shapes and click Merge! The palette will let you select which piece of the costume it should get merged into
  • Cheer & 'Go to Room' buttons added to Rec Center projector room

Plus a bunch of bug fixes, including:

  • Made a few tweaks that should hopefully help with performance and PS4 crashing - note we will be making some larger changes to address these issues in the next update!
  • Daily challenge reward fixes
  • Fixed a bug causing all the Cyber Junk City videos to display as black screens
  • Grenade bug fixes across activities
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players who were out in Dodgeball to walk onto the court
  • Fixed Paintball sniper scopes not displaying correctly in Spillway
  • Fixed bug that prevented screens players from writing on drawing surfaces
  • Fixed bug where trigger zones in object mode sometimes output a player ID
  • Fixed a bug that would cause Objects to be off by some number of centimeters on multiplayer room restores

Please see here for convenient links to controls, tutorials, comfort options, etc.: https://www.againstgrav.com/community/

Thanks for playing Rec Room! As always, don't hesitate to give us your feedback =]
